Decodable Library for Early Readers (Spring 2023)

Decoding skills, turning print into speech by matching letters to sounds, are the building blocks for reading success. This grant provides students in kindergarten through second grade with practices texts specifically designed to promote the foundational skills of reading: phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. These additional resources will enable teachers to meet more diverse needs within the classroom, and the visually appealing and interesting stories engage students, while allowing them to practice book handling.

Summer Reading Kick Off (Fall 2022)

Brecht Elementary holds a “Summer Reading Kick-Off” and provides each student with an age-appropriate book to read over the summer. Students choose their book and make a craft designed to remind them to read over the summer. This grant is made possible through the Louise Engle Memorial Fund established through MTEF.

Story Walk (Spring 2022)

This project will create outdoor reading experiences to be displayed at each elementary school on a rotating basis over the summer. Designed to promote literacy and movement, Story Walks feature picture books posted to signs along a path or trail and include prompts to encourage reading comprehension and activity.  Story Walks promote physical activity, time outside, and family interaction, while fostering a culture of literacy at school and in the community. This project will create literacy-rich learning experiences over the summer break to combat learning loss and boost student achievement.
